There are NO WOMEN in Talk Radio
01.20.10
Ok, ok… settle down - yes of course there are a few - but VERY FEW. In fact so few of the top talk radio programs are hosted by women it begs the question - WHY?
As I look at the 39 top programs in Talk Radio (according to Talkers Magazine) - I see a measly 5 women on the list. Not saying the women are measly - just the number!
Let’s consider the top programs:
Rush Limbaugh
Sean Hannity
Glenn Beck
Michael Savage
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Laura Ingraham
Mark Levin
Dave Ramsey
Neal Boortz
Mike Gallagher
Michael Medved
Jim Bohannon
Doug Stephan
Bill Bennett
Jerry Doyle
There are only 2 women in this top list - both Laura’s… both huge stars, but only 2.
So why are there so few?
A bias? An all-boys-club? Coincidence?
Could be a reasonable explanation for this… Your comments are welcome below.

It seems to me that before you can answer the question (why are there no women in talk radio) You need to answer this question. Are women lining up trying to get into talk radio, but are being turned away? Are there a lot of women out there complaining because they can’t get into talk radio for whatever reason? I for one never gave it any thought about women not being in talk radio. I figure that if there are women that have a desire to do this, then one way or another they will get into it. I’m not sure I understand why we ask questions like this. Is it just to get something started? If there’s a pot here that needs stirring, then why don’t we get all those women out there who may or may not be trying to get into talk radio, let them stir the pot. I think you might be surprised at how many people you’ll find that doesn’t give two Hoots whether it’s a man or a woman doing the talking, If they are doing a good job.The only thing I am for here is make sure the people who have the desire to do this kind of work, get the opportunity, that they are not turned away for reasons of gender, religion, or skin color. I personally don’t care one way or another just as long as no one is being denied the job for the above stated reasons.
Thank You

Fully agree with David Bell / above!
I also believe it might be “the interest” and experience women may have as to topics to discuss — balanced against the (continuously audited) audience / its interest to listen to specific hosts.
My guewss would be, that more males listen to talk-shows and are not interested in topics many female hosts would like to discuss.
Results: low scores in audits — which kills any program, regardless whether hosted by males or females! There is no “easy out” in the rough and tumble world of “talk-radio”: number of listeners and demographics are ALL that counts — for the resulting advertising dollars and network ratings!
Besides Martha Montelongo, Loris Riskala, and Tammy Bruce there are a host of women on radio. But you are correct, not as many as men. This is not due to any conspiracy by anyone. This is evident by the number of women on the blogs, Townhall, Fox News, and so many other places there are many women that the public listens to. Shawn Hannity and Glen Beck struggled for years before they became so well known. It all adds up to perseverance, good marketing, and lost of luck; that’s the way it is in the business.
I think the male and female minds do have different priorities. BUT THEN AGAIN THAT DEPENDS ON THE ENVIRONMENT ONE Surrounds HIM?HERSELF with.. But that does not negate either one of them. We do need a balance in the left and right hemispheres of the brain. This enables people to test their intuitive abilities(the right hemisphere), and be proven correct by the intellect(the left hemisphere)…..Then you can open your mind to new possibilities, because your beliefs cause your experiences.
Well I just thought about this question yesterday. I would LOVE TO DO TALK RADIO. WHERE DO I SIGN UP?
I have lots to say about the Consciousness of people and how many of our problems can be solved if people had more confidence in themselves, believed in themselves, and quit blaming everything outside themselves, for situations they get themselves into by just reacting, instead of acting.
There are so many opinions out there about, everything under the sun, but there is one ultimate goal, that surpasses all others, in my book; and that is for people to be willing to grow.
There are rough times ahead, and people have to know how to keep a balance in all things.
BALANCE IN ALL THAT YOU THINK…This is the time when the planetary cycle is moving from one energy field to another. Another that is balanced in the Feminine and Masculine.
DID I GO OFF TOPIC….oops!
ANYWAY SEE HOW WOMEN CAN JUST TALK IT UP!!!!!!!!!!LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!
WHAT MATTERS TO YOU!!!!! TALK RADIO< COMIN’ at YOU!!!!!!!!
Because women are still not confident enough and tend to be overzealous and
competitive with each other. That is why it will take more time before they reach
men’s level and experience. But one day men and women will reach equal rights
not only on radio talk sector but at any level.
As far as I am concerned, gender bias is so yesterday. Anyone using that as an excuse or weapon to get anywhere does not deserve to get anyplace.
When I first started a discussion group in 1951 and kept it going for several years, and then took to writing a monthly bulletin, I would have loved being a talk radio hostess, but unfortunately,it never occurred to me. I did, after all, just sorta’ fell into it. Giving speeches or talks, was not something I ever planned to do. In those days the days of the so-called Fairness Doctrine, Fulton Lewis, George Sokolsky, Dean Manion, etc., had a bad time. Even the patriot newspapers have gone bye-bye. Joan Veon’s book,(Charles The Sustainable Prince) was dedicated to those who kept the faith from 1945 on and I think most were women. This situation didn’t just start in 1960 as so many like to say. As I recall Joan’s list was mostly women. There were few like Phyllis Schlafly who had the smarts to parlay her beliefs into an organization, radio or otherwise. However, there was Diane Silverman (where is she?) and still going is Janet Parschal(sp.?) From my experience once you started M.C.ing, the info just came to you until you knew a whole lot about lots! What we didn’t know was how to make a living doing it, or any of the other things we did, so when we had to go to work, it was in other fields. Although I made many talks, none of them were for money, as the left often hurled “professional patriots” at us as it was, along with all the other things hurled at us. Last year I threw away about 150 reel-to-reel tapes for lack of anything to play them on. They took up so much space. And the beating I took from the women’s iconic magazines over my book, Bats In the Belfry, was bad enough. Remember what happened to the girl singer, her name slips my mind, when she stood up against homosexuality?
David Bell and Vladimir above have spoken for me. Further, I’ve not encountered many, in fact very few, women who think in the terms that I do. Once did a paper for a college course I was taking, Aristotelean Logic, at the instructor’s behest, and of course, for grade. The instructor was a woman who wanted to know what we thought, individually, was the difference, if any, between men and women. This, of course, outside of the obvious physical difference and babies, etc., pertaining to the thought processes between the two genders. All of us had our own ideas, mostly gender biased ideas based upon whether we were male, or female; but, she wanted us to get past that, to delve into what we understood of the subject we were being instructed in, logic. I did a whole lot of research on the topic, taking days and weeks before I thought I had read enough, talked to enough people, both professional and layman before I set pen to paper. The conclusion I reached was not what I published. I needed a good grade, you see, and knew that if I wrote what my research indicated, I’d get a “D.” I’d pass, but just barely; so, I wrote what the instructor wanted to hear, that there were no differences in outcome between the thinking of men and women, although there were great disparities between the methods employed and the course pursued to reach a shared outcome. Got a “B” on the paper.
What I learned, however, was almost the exact opposite of what I published for grade. Men and women do not think alike, use totally different constructs of logic to arrive at conclusions and the conclusions reached are not identical. When it came to abstract thinking, I found that women figured poorly vs men. When the subject was pure logic, women reach totally different conclusions than men, the logic employed was unnecessarily convoluted and complex. Instead of seeking the simplest approach, women ultimately chose the complex, and in so doing came up with unusual answers. Though not wrong in many cases, very different than what men determined.
So, you’re asking why there are so few women in talk radio; however, none of us out here, with few exceptions, are qualified to give a true and probable answer. We aren’t in the radio business. Not-withstanding my being unqualified I will tell you what I think of the dearth of female radio hosts. First, the demographics of the radio audience is mostly male, outnumbering the women who listen by 3 to 1, and it has to do with appeal. Not sex appeal, most women have that, it’s more to do with power appeal, and we aren’t in a matriarchic society where women have power. I think women are too indecisive, the few exceptions are Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, Michelle Malkin. Only one of those three has a talk radio show, and she’s successful. Men have it over the women for another reason and that’s how they come across on the air, the voice. If I have to listen to one more shrill female voice like Rosie Odonnell, or phony like Hillary Clinton, so help me, I’ll explode. If your audience is mostly male, you aren’t going to sway that male mind unless you’ve got the intellect and brilliance to do so. I could go on for probably the next three years, but I’ll stop here. You just know I’m going to take a lot of flack here, right?
Laura Ingraham is the BEST. At least she is entertaining while talking tough facts. Rush and Glenn have burned me out with their hate and fear. I strongly disagree with the policies of this president, besides the fact he lies, cheats, and gets other people to do his dirty work and take the blame. obama is clueless and runs when called out.
Laura will take on the big boys and make points based on facts. She has no fear.
Neal Boortz is entertaining as well. Beck has a place in all this putting the pieces together but, he is tedious at times.
I have no patience for more tedious at the end of my day.
As long as Laura Ingraham is working, the rest of the ladies and gents can just stay home and write hate blogs.
There are at least six women that would do a great job on radio and i’m sure that in the near future it will happen. The public is starting to recognize the special talent that some women have and it will take place.

Most of us are influenced by the major news media sound bite. This is because most of the major news media is oriented toward socialist, Marxist, principals. Women are influenced by subtle leftest programming, such as Oprah. Oprah backed President Obama, knowing that his church was racist and hated our Democratic Republic. The preacher of this church is a racist bigot. She joined this congregation until its racist policies became public. I could go through a litany of programming that subtlyinfluences mainly women. I believe women are more susceptible to the barrage of leftest thought which permeates all variety of news and entertainment.
Give them a telephone instead of a microphone and they will talk for hours.
Yup, give ‘em a telephone and they’ll talk for hours! And, what will they have said? Nothing!
I started listening to a gal last year that had me hooked on talk radio immediately. I don’t know how long shes been on or how far her voice is heard but her name is Vickie MaKenna, and you can listen to her on WISN RADIO at 10:00 am a Milwaukee station. Shes a converted liberal from Madison, Wisconsin. Shes very intelligent lady and tells it like it is. I’m sure some day she and others like her will be all over the radio. If there will be talkradio to listen to.
I agree with Charles all the way.
I was thinking Sarah Palin might of been a good host but now I don’t think so. She says the same things all the time.
But she might be good at asking questions
Mark T WHAT THE HEY! Frederick, not very nice. Don’t tell anyone but it’s true!
I think the best female talk show hostess is a new one at KGO station 82 in San Francisco. She is on Friday and Saturday mornings from 1am to 5am. Listen to her than you will understand what I am saying.
I understand that this is a very important issue to some however there are so many more important issues we all are facing. Our president with his Czars and Congress under the leadership of Pelosi and Reed are threatening to shred our Constitution, put coal generated energy out of business, along with the unions own 2/3 of our automobile industry, preparing to control the temperature of our homes, prepared to censor the internet and free speech, and generally negate a rule of the people brought to us (and the world) by the sacrifices of so many.
Don’t you all think that we should be concentrating on correcting the imbalance in Congress and then electing a president who has more in his wake then great oratory skills? The one we have now has been carried by those who hate America (and all it has stood for) and are determined to make us all surfs of an elite socialist ruling class.
So let’s concentrate on the things that really matter and will make a difference in the years to come. Those who feel that we need more women on talk radio should first solidify all our Constitutional rights first and then go get a job on radio. If you are good enough, you just might end up with more listeners than Rush.
I want give the name of this outstanding talk show hostess from KGO San Francisco, it is PAT THURSON. If we are lucky she will sub for others at a more suitable hour.
It’s quite simple… Women like to be looked at and no one can see you on a radio! Those women who could care less about their looks convay over the airways a personality that is not embraced by the masses, thus no mass suport, no show.
Its all money, you have to kiss ass to make it as a politation or a talk show host. Doing so means one has to be
politicaly correct which is not very interesting to the masses who buy products via the radio networds.
Lora Ingram, Tammy Bruce, Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Sean Hannity are not so politically correct. So Willie, what do you mean by politically correct? By kissing ass, do you mean being polite and respectful?
It is absolutely NOT quite simple! Women like to be looked at, so since there’s no video in an audio media format they don’t do well? What planet do you come from, Willie? Have you never heard a highly intelligent woman arguing her case on the issue at hand successfully? Women can do that, you know! No different than men. There is no logical, nor populist reason why there are so few women on talk radio. It just is! Can they be as successful as men? Yes, of course, look at the examples presented in comments above.
Is there a reason this question is being asked, other than to inject another feminist fallacy of the false argument? If not, then why bother asking at all; and, if so, then the question is based upon a faulty premise at the outset. Radio personalities get to the top, just like personalities in all other media, because they draw an audience, and hence draw in money to the sponsors. Radio station managers and producers don’t put people on the air to lose money, which is the honest and truest answer. If a woman will, or can, make money for a radio station, she’ll be on the air!
It does seem a tad incongruous that women don’t fill more of the top slots. Could it be also that maybe, and please don’t ask me why because then I will be forced to conjure up an answer in response, that women aren’t attracted to the hot-shock-rock jock profession? Numbers, as you point out, are weird though…
I, for one, plan to host a local talk program and certainly hope to break into the national arena as time and experience progress. The talk format will be more of a problem-solving nature rather than just a political platform. Women don’t tend to be in the solution business. We tend to be more apt to hone in on the problems rather than focusing on the solutions and I would like to see that change for women. We’ve somehow allowed ourselves to talk about what directly affects us individually as well as our families, instead of taking a look at the big picture. That can be a bit grating on someone’s nerves.
Good for you Ruth. So many people know how to complain but do not have dedication required to do something about what concerns them. You are correct in saying that it is necessary point out the problem, get people to talk about them, before a solution can present and implemented.
It really is remarkable and educational review. This have been exceptionally valuable knowing a whole lot of elements.
